Welcome to the only site dedicated to the work of the British watercolour painter Frederick William Scarbrough (Exh1860-1939). You may ask why is the site known as Frank Scarbrough? Well somewhere along the line much of his work was catalogued as being by Frank not Fred and it has stuck, even with the biggest and best auctioneers and dealers. My thanks to his family who have contacted the site to confirm this. Scarbrough was a London artist known for atmospheric paintings of shipping and marine subjects. His most popular works centre around the working Thames in the pool of London but his sea scenes also features subjects in ports up the East coast of Britain in such places such as Whitby Bay, Kirkcaldy and Lowestoft. Working in the early 20th Century he is regarded as one of the very best marine painters of his generation capturing the atmosphere of the working boats and shipping of the time. His work is more impressionistic in style than many of his contemporaries such as Hemy, Wylie and Dixon and can trace its style back to innovators like Turner. Born in Boothby, Lincolnshire in 1863 he was the son of a farmer, living in Spring Farm Folkingham for many years before pursuing a career in art. Described as a natural talent he lived in London and Scotland before returning to Grantham where he lived for the later part of his life. His work was widely collected and he was also known to have worked with other notable local artists such as Cuthbert Bradley. He married at age 74, finally dying of a heart affliction aged 82 after being taken ill on his way to Blackpool in 1945.
